Build Your Future as a Costume Cutter/Draper

The Costume Cutter/Draper Certificate provides the student with training to create patterns, cut and assemble costumes for the entertainment industry. Students also receive training in basic theatrical production process. This certificate is designed to provide the student with a course of study leading to certification and employment in the entertainment industry as a Costume Cutter/Draper.

Upon completion of the program students will be able to:

  • Analyze a costume design sketch/rendering to determine its patterning needs.
    Pattern a basic muslin/toile per the measurements of an actor.
  • Create a custom muslin/toile for an actor.
  • Create a historical pattern based upon the costume designer’s sketch and the actor’s measurements.
  • Adapt a commercial pattern to match a designer’s costume sketch.

Most apparel continues to be produced internationally. As a result, employment of fashion designers in the apparel manufacturing industry is projected to decline about 33 percent over the projection period, slowing the overall employment growth of fashion designers.

However, employment of fashion designers in the retail trade industry is projected to grow about 22 percent over the projection period. Retailers are selling more fashion-inspired clothing, which increases the demand for fashion designers to design clothing and accessories for everyday wear for the mass market.
